Student experiences

There are over 300 registered student organizations at Virginia Tech. A number of those organizations are affiliated with the Computer Science Department working directly with the Department to serve students.
- Because your organization’s mission or purpose is in some way aligned with the strategic plan of the CS department.
- Whether through requests for funding events or travel, department support for room reservations or event organization, etc.
- Because your organization wants to be considered for support from the department.
- Because a significant number of your organization’s members are declared CS majors
Please note that being a CS Affiliated Organization doesn’t mean your org “belongs” to the department, and it doesn’t prevent a similar arrangement with another unit
- Utilize existing department practices for requesting resources (e.g., funding, scheduling events.
- Participate in CS Department events including the CS Student Welcome, Student Org Fair, and other events that may more directly align with the org’s mission
- Collaborate with CS|Source when connecting with industry partners
- Organizations can leverage CS|Source connections if desired, and orgs are expected to let CS|Source know if and when they’re talking to industry partners
- Attend regular student leader meetings (roughly twice per semester)
CS Affiliated Organizations can expect the following benefits:
- CS department support for organizing events, reserving rooms, etc.
- Promotion on the CS department website
- Support publicizing events and activities
- Access to CS|Source staff and resources for making connections to industry
- Access to advising, mentoring, and leadership training
- The ability to request CS department funding for expenses that match certain requirements
To become a CS Affiliated Organization, your organization must:
- Be and demonstrate being a VT Registered Student Organization (which must be renewed and re-demonstrated annually)
- Apply to be a CS Affiliated Organization (which must be renewed annually)
- Maintain a list of all organization members and the executive board and make that list accesible to CS Department staff and faculty upon request.*

- Follow any other rules, policies, guidelines, etc. applicable to CS Affiliated Organizations, VT Registered Student Organizations, or to Virginia Tech in general
*To ensure compliance, either:
- a majority of the organization’s executive board must be declared CS majors, or
- a significant number of members should be CS majors and the organization includes a designated CS-liaison who is a CS major.
